How to Clean Your Metal Furniture

Metallic furniture looks amazing when brand new, however over time, without proper care, it can become rusted and stained when neglected.

Most metal frames are easy to maintain and clean, whether they are indoor or outdoor furniture; however, each metal has its own techniques and methods when cleaning.

Here’s our guide to cleaning and caring for your metal furniture.

Here Is What You Need to Know about How to Clean Your Metal Furniture

Stainless Steel

Greasy hands and water stains result in dirty and spotted stainless steel furniture. To remove these harsh stains, rub diluted white vinegar on the stainless steel using a soft, damp cloth. Wipe the solution clean and let the furniture dry before using again. If there are signs of rust or corrosion, lightly scrub the surface with a paste of baking powder and water with a soft-bristled brush. Wipe the paste off with damp cloths and dry with a microfiber cloth.

Galvanized Steel

The matte gray metal can be cleaned using hot water and mild dish soap. Lightly scrub the surface in small circular strokes with a soft-bristle brush. Wipe the metal clean with a soft cloth. Regular cleaning can slow down the degradation of the coating and keep the furniture looking brand new.

Powder-Coated Aluminum

Aluminum is a popular material used for furniture because it’s easy to work with and used to create interesting furniture designs. Ideal for being strong and lightweight, it’s more susceptible to denting than other metals. It tends to get scuffed when used regularly and should be removed for general cleaning. Gently rub a non-abrasive liquid cleaner onto any scuff using a soft cloth and water. For gloss finishes, you can retain the shine by applying baby oil or car wax.

Outdoor Furniture Covers

Your patio is an extension of your home, so naturally, you want it to stay clean and be as comfortable as the rest of your home. Whether you are looking to buy new furniture for your patio or already own a beautiful set, one of the best accessories that will help protect your furniture is to invest in a cover for your patio furniture. Patio furniture covers are specially designed to protect your outdoor furniture from outdoor elements when they are not in use. This may include one giant cover that protects the entire outdoor dining set or smaller covers that are designed specifically to cover the table and chairs. Furniture covers are especially helpful to prevent metal patio furniture from rusting during the winter months.

Even if you live in an area that doesn’t experience extreme weather or changes in the season, it’s smart to still give your outdoor furniture an extra layer of protection against weather conditions. The smallest amounts of morning dew or pollination can eventually lead to damage to your furniture over time. Additionally, furniture covers ensure your patio furniture is always ready to use, eliminating the task to always have to clean it off before using. Don’t use plastic tablecloths as a furniture cover alternative because they can trap water, humidity, and heat that can damage cloth or metal patio furniture.

Use Soap and Cleaners

Metal furniture is best cleaned with a cloth or sponge using water and non-detergent soap. Do not use abrasive scrubbers or cleaners because they will scratch the finish, potentially exposing the metal to rust-inducing moisture. For dirty spots, use a window cleaner or a non-abrasive multi-purpose cleaner with a soft cloth.

When cleaning, inspect the metal furniture for scratches or any signs of rust on the surface and furniture joints. Apply touch-up paint to scratches to prevent the exposed metal from rusting. If there is rust or mold already on the present, sand the area lightly using fine-grit sandpaper and apply rust-proof touch-up paint. To remove oxidation from aluminum furniture, use a solution of equal parts of white vinegar and water and wipe the effective areas.

To prepare, your metal furniture always starts with a light cleaning. Sweep surfaces with a soft brush or cloth. Then use non-detergent liquid soap to clean without harming your metal furniture. For tougher, stubborn stains and mildew, use water and white vinegar solutions.
